Sebastian was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. In her youth, she aspired to be a dancer and a film actress. Her family frowned on both ambitions, however, so she fled to New York at the age of 15. Upon her arrival in New York City, Sebastian's southern drawl was thick enough to "cut with a knife". She followed around theatrical agents before returning at night to a $12-a-month room, after being consistently rejected. Sebastian's first contact in Hollywood was Robert Kane, who gave her a film test at United Studios. She performed in George White's Scandals and later co-starred with Joan Crawford and Anita Page for a popular series of MGM romantic dramas including Our Dancing Daughters (1928) and Our Blushing Brides (1930). Sebastian also appeared in 1929's Spite Marriage, wherein she was cast opposite her then-lover Buster Keaton. By the mid-1930s, Sebastian was semi-retired from acting after marrying Hopalong Cassidy star William Boyd. After their 1936 divorce, she returned to acting appearing in mostly bit parts. Her last onscreen appearance was in the 1948 film The Miracle of the Bells. Sebastian married actor William Boyd in December 1930 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They began a relationship after meeting on the set of His First Command in 1929. They divorced in 1936. In 1947, Sebastian married Miami Beach businessman Harold Shapiro to whom she remained married until her death. On April 8, 1957, Sebastian died of cancer at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. She is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. For her contribution to the motion picture industry, Dorothy Sebastian has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6655 Hollywood Blvd. The Miracle of the Bell1948-03-27 Among the Living1941-12-12 Kansas Cyclone1941-06-24 Days of Jesse James1939-12-20 The Arizona Kid1939-09-28 The Women1939-09-01 Rough Riders' Round-up1939-03-13 The Mysterious Pilot1937-12-09 The Life of Vergie Wint1934-06-14 Allez Oop1934-05-25 Ship of Wanted Men1933-09-08 Contrabando1932-09-14 They Never Come Back1932-05-10 The Wide Open Spaces1931-12-28 The Deceiver1931-11-21 The Big Gamble1931-09-04 Ships of Hate1931-06-15 Screen Snapshots Series1930-12-01 The Utah Kid1930-10-27 Brothers1930-10-19 Our Blushing Brides1930-07-19 Hell's Island1930-07-16 Free and Easy1930-03-22 Montana Moon1930-03-20 Officer O'Brien1930-02-15 The Rounder1930-01-18 His First Command1929-12-28 The Unholy Night1929-09-13 The Single Standard1929-07-27 Spite Marriage1929-03-24 The Devil's Apple Tree1929-02-20 The Spirit of Youth1929-02-15 Morgan's Last Raid1929-01-05 A Woman of Affairs1928-12-15 Show People1928-11-20 Our Dancing Daughters1928-09-01 The Adventurer1928-07-14 The Haunted Ship1927-12-01 Love1927-11-29 The Arizona Wildcat1927-11-20 Twelve Miles Out1927-07-08 On Ze Boulevard1927-06-25 California1927-05-07 The Demi-Bride1927-02-19 The Show1927-01-22 You'd Be Surprised1926-09-24 Beauty à la Mud1926-08-28 Torrent1926-02-21 Bluebeard's Seven Wives1926-01-13 Why Women Love1925-10-18 Winds of Chance1925-08-15 Sackcloth and Scarlet1925-03-22
